Favourite Fabrics!

I have fallen deeper and deeper in love with the idea of custom upholstered chairs and ottomans over the past few weeks! There is no better way to get a signature look in your home then incorporating some of your favourite prints…

These are whats on my list!

Kelani is one of my favourite fabric stores in the Sydney area. They offer a service to create you custom cushions (in all different sizes) and custom lampshades. Whilst browsing through their range having this service available to you at a click is extremely handy!

 Also loving these prints!

Happy shopping everyone!

Get the Romance Back in your Master Bedroom.

Happy Valentines day! In light of the most romantic day of the year I’m going to give you some tips and hints for making your bedroom a zone for passion and relaxation.

We are all guilty of allowing our bedrooms to become work zones or not keeping it the ‘escape’ it’s meant to be. Having university books on your bedside, a laptop on standby to swiftly plonk on your lap as soon as you wake, toys scattered around the floor, they are all relaxation killers! For the last year I have tried to keep my bedroom a relaxation only zone, I sleep better and I have a better relationship, so don’t you think its worth investing in?

This valentines day spoil yourself with these romantic gifts which should transform your bedroom.

1) First step: Get rid of that bedroom TV. Seriously right now!… go… unplug…

Watching television directly before going to bed does not prepare the body for a good nights sleep, it also isn’t very romantic. Whats that? …You need that extra TV because he loves sports and you would rather curl up and watch Greys Anatomy on DVD?… Hmmmm OK I’ll allow you to keep it then, I would hate to cause a remote war… BUT! You have to hide it so it isn’t the feature of the bedroom. Hide a TV in a beautiful antique Armoire or Cupboard and close the doors when not watching TV.

Normany Armoire from Meirelles. RRP: $6,800.00

2) Beautiful Bed Linens: Get contrasting patterns and prints with a neutral throw, like the lovely navy one below. Go for different textures and fabrics to add some luxe to any bedroom. Silks, satins, high quality cottons, plush velvets and furs. My favourites are Bianca Lorenne (New Zealand), Yves Delorme Paris (France: I bought a comforter from this brand when I was in Paris, the most amazing quality and even now four years later it still looks beautiful) and Missoni (Italy)

Yves Delorme

Herringbone Print Linen from Elm Place Homewares. Duvet. RRP: $198.00

I love this set as it looks like Missoni and is high quality but without the price tag.

3) Get a custom-made bed head in a plush fabric or gorgeous pattern: A custom bed head can add a lot of character to a room. I love the Hampton’s bed head form Heatherly Design which is based around the design of a Wing-back chair. This is available in leathers and suades- buy one that suites your loves and needs.

Hampton’s Bedhead from Heatherly Design. From $1,885 for Double.

Remember the bedroom is for relaxing, the living room is for living, try and keep your bedroom an ‘escape zone’.

Fashion to functional furnishings

I absolutely love fashion. I don’t mean that I like it, I mean: faint, weak at the knees, heart racing and facing going red type of LOVE. This love affair of mine has lasted longer than any relationship, and its about time I made it a permanent fixture in my home setting. My two favourite brands for inspiring decor are Missoni and Marni. I love colour so of course they are obvious choices. Don’t get me wrong, Missoni Home is insanely expensive, but I figure: this is something I will have for life. To be honest if I have to subconsciously convince myself that this will be the heirloom I pass down to my grandchildren, then I’m totally going to do it.

I after looking at my “Missoni and Marni mission” from a number of angles I feel I now have a game plan! I have looked at Missoni chairs online: I apologise in advance if you love them, but I really don’t.

Madmoiselle Chair by Missoni Home. RRP: $1,140.00

I mean, it isn’t terrible… is it worth over one thousand? I don’t think so, what do you think?

I have decided to go down an alternate path. The great thing about most large design houses is that you can often buy some of their signature prints or fabrics by the meter. I had a look at many of the Missoni prints available at Spence and Lyda (Surry Hills). They have so many types that you will find one for almost any decor. I chose these two for the contender list for my new signature chair:

Masulah print by Missoni from Spence and Lyda. RRP: $225/mtr.

Mogle print by Missoni from Spence and Lyda. RRP: $424/mtr.

I am leaning towards the Masulah, what do you think?

I am then going to get this custom upholstered to a beautiful frame, like this one from La Maison:

Haut Armchair in Ebony from La Maison. RRP: $2,027.00

Hey its a lot of money… but this is the type of thing you will only do once (or perhaps twice, or trice :P) so why not spoil yourself with something you completely adore.

A statement chair can really transform a space from drab to fab! Have a look at these great images which inspired me:

Totally love this one! Talk about mixing prints and patterns. Marni eat your heart out!

If you really wanting something to update your home look to see what types of prints and patterns they are using on the runway then re-interpret them into custom upholstery choice.

I can see a painting similar to that skirt stretched on a feature wall, with a stripe patterned upholstered armchair, and a heavily beaded pendent light: perfection!

Ikea: more bang for your buck.

Hi Guys,

I’ll be honest- I am NOT a fan of Ikea. I believe you get what you pay for, and I prefer to support smaller quality furniture businesses. However in saying that, money is a huge issue for everyone and Ikea does offer some great items. If your handy with an Allen Key and don’t mind building your own pieces, then go for it.

WARNING!!!!!!!: Please do not fall into the Ikea trap- buy a few pieces if you need them, but don’t fill your apartment with Ikea stock, there is simply nothing more boring!

I’ve had a look at the new Tempe store here in Sydney and picked out a few of my fav apartment friendly buys:

Kipplan Two Seater sofa from Ikea. RRP: $699

This sofa is dirt cheap! and quite practical for an apartment being only 180cm wide. Made from split leather it is cheaper then regualr leather as its made from leather fibres that have been bonded together with a polymer.

I really hate the legs as it looks very cheap- I trick I learnt is that you can often replace those unsightly legs by purchasing alternate ones or even getting a nice piece of wood cut at Bunnings then drilling out a space for the metal leg to sit within it. Basically by making a ‘cap’ for the ugly legs to sit in you can create a much more expensive look! Plus you can stain the wood in any way you like to match back with your other finishings.

This sofa is crying out for some colourful cushions, try Kelani Fabrics who often a custom cushion making service. http://www.kelanifabric.com.au/

Stornas/ Henriksdal Ding Table and four chairs from Ikea. RRP: $689.

I’m all for upholstered dining chairs! Not only are they comfy they do add a more expensive look. I love this dining set as the table is extendable! This is perfect for those of you in small apartments who require a larger table every now and then, but simply don’t have the space to have one all the time. This is a real bargain, however, to fight the upholstery fabric (which reminds me of a cheap hotel) think about clashing it with a funky table runner or even seat cushions. I don’t think you can go wrong with this one!

Ikea Ps from Ikea. RRP: $199.

Either you love it or hate it. This is a good buy for those of you that love the retro style. This is perfect as a TV cabinet or even as a sideboard depending on your needs. I can see this working with a really funky vintage lounge. For those of you who love retro/vintage/non-run of-the-mill furniture pieces stay tuned for my next blog as I’m going to drop some great names where you can get great bits at a steal!

Hemnes Mirror from Ikea. RRP $119

Simple, elegant and can be used in any home, enough said! Why pay more?

What is your experience with Ikea? Love it or Hate it?
